Pedestrian struck, killed on Route 15 in Sussex County

SPARTA TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) — A 63-year-old man died Tuesday night after being struck by a commercial vehicle on Route 15 in Sparta Township, authorities said.

Police responded at approximately 8:30 p.m. Feb. 10 to Route 15 North near the 9-mile marker for a report of a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle.

Upon arrival, officers found the man in the roadway with bystanders performing lifesaving measures. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries, police said.

A preliminary investigation indicates the man, whose identity was not released, had exited a disabled vehicle that was stopped on the shoulder when he was struck by a commercial vehicle traveling in the right lane.

The commercial vehicle and driver immediately stopped, and the driver was extremely cooperative with police.

The northbound lanes of Route 15 were temporarily closed while emergency personnel secured the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by the Sparta Police Department’s Accident Reconstruction Unit. No additional information was released.
