Pedestrian walkway reopening Wednesday, PA-bound traffic to resume Thursday at New Hope-Lambertville toll bridge
Bridge Shutdown Ends Ahead of Schedule
LAMBERTVILLE, NJ (Hunterdon County) – The New Hope-Lambertville Toll-Supported Bridge is expected to reopen to pedestrian traffic by Wednesday night and to Pennsylvania-bound vehicles by midday Thursday, January 23, the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission announced Wednesday.
The partial reopening is occurring four to five days ahead of schedule. A two-week shutdown of the bridge to all vehicular traffic and pedestrian crossings began on January 13 and was initially expected to last until Monday, January 27.
The closure was necessary for workers and engineers to remove and replace a severely deteriorated structural connection on the 120-year-old steel-truss bridge.
The key component – a worn-out, 4-inch-diameter, 18-inch-long cylindrical steel pin – was replaced late last week. This pin connected a critical joint of 13 structural steel members on the bridge’s second span from the Pennsylvania side.
Despite recent cold weather, the bridge is still on track to reopen for two-way traffic in mid-February.
