Phillipsburg police share holiday tips to prevent package theft

PHILLIPSBURG, N.J. (Warren County) — With the holiday delivery season underway, the Phillipsburg Police Department is reminding residents to take steps to protect packages from theft, according to a community safety bulletin released by the department.

The bulletin notes that an increase in Amazon, USPS and other package deliveries during the holidays can create opportunities for so-called “Grinches” and encourages residents to use secure delivery options. Police recommend requiring a signature, using delivery lockers or pickup points, or placing a secure delivery box or locked receptacle at home.

The department also suggests giving carriers clear instructions, such as leaving packages in less visible areas or scheduling deliveries for times when someone is home.

Delivery management tools—including USPS Informed Delivery, UPS My Choice, FedEx Delivery Manager and Amazon’s photo verification—can help residents track and monitor incoming packages.

Police strongly emphasize the value of home surveillance. Doorbell cameras, security cameras and motion-activated lights can deter thieves, the bulletin says. Systems from companies such as Ring, Google and Arlo were listed as examples, although many options are available. Even posting signage indicating surveillance may discourage criminal activity.

The department is encouraging residents to remain proactive throughout the holiday season to ensure packages arrive safely.
