Police investigate after woman leaves dog at Sussex County shelter

HOPATCONG BOROUGH, NJ (Sussex County) – Hopatcong Police are seeking information after a woman allegedly left a dog at the Hopatcong Animal Shelter, throwing the leash at a staff member before fleeing the scene, according to the shelter.

On Dec. 26, at around 10:55 a.m., a woman entered the shelter with a black hound mix dog and immediately threw the leash at a staff member before running out of the facility, a post on the shelter’s Facebook page said.

The woman, described as wearing a green Jets hoodie and a mask, reportedly screamed, “Sorry, his name is Roscoe,” as she fled the scene.

She left in a white Hyundai Sonata, model years 2020-2023. The dog is in need of medical attention, the shelter’s post stated.
