Police: Morris County man who drove through road closure on Route 206 charged with DWI

BYRAM TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – A Morris County man who allegedly drove through a road closure on Route 206 in Byram Township Thursday morning was charged with driving while intoxicated, according to police.

On Aug. 24, an officer who was working a traffic control detail at a construction site on a closed section of Route 206 near Waterloo Road, observed a vehicle drive around his vehicle and through traffic control cones that indicated the roadway was closed, police said.

The officer activated his lights and sirens and followed the vehicle in an attempt to initiate a motor vehicle stop. The vehicle, which was driving toward the construction site where numerous workers were in the roadway, drove through other cones and passed a police officer who was standing in the roadway and indicating to the vehicle to stop, police said.

The vehicle eventually pulled over in the area of  the Exxon. While speaking to the driver, who was identified as Ethan A. Reiss, 30, of Flanders, the officer felt he was intoxicated, police said.

Reiss was asked to perform several field sobriety tests, which he failed. He was then arrested and transported to the station where he consented to and failed two breath tests, police said.

Reiss was charged with driving while intoxicated, open alcoholic beverage container in a motor vehicle, careless driving, reckless driving, failure to obey traffic control device, disregard of officer directing traffic, traffic on marked lanes, failure to pull over for an emergency vehicle, failure to change lanes for an emergency vehicle, failure to obey signal of police, failure to comply with the direction of an officer, and driving on a closed roadway.

Reiss was released pending a court appearance.
