Police: Sussex County man charged after allegedly brandishing imitation firearm
NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — A Sparta Township man has been charged after allegedly brandishing what appeared to be a firearm in a Newton parking lot last year, police said.
The Newton Police Department said it received a report on April 14, 2026, that a firearm had been displayed during an incident in July 2025. Following an investigation, authorities identified the suspect and took him into custody on April 17.
Scott Vilardo, 20, is charged with aggravated assault by brandishing and pointing a firearm, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, police said.
During a search, officers recovered an air pistol from the suspect’s vehicle that police said closely resembled a striker-fired Glock handgun.
Authorities noted that imitation firearms have become increasingly realistic in appearance due to advances in technology, including 3D printing, and the popularity of airsoft-style replicas. In some cases, police said, such items are manufactured under license from firearms companies and may be difficult to distinguish from real weapons.
Police reminded the public to use caution and avoid displaying imitation firearms in a manner that could cause alarm or put others at risk.
