Power surges reported in Morris County; JCP&L says repairs completed

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — Residents in Washington Township reported power surges that caused electrical smells and temporary outages in homes this week, prompting an investigation by Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L), officials said.

Mayor Michael Marino addressed the situation Monday, noting that the township was in contact with the utility company.

“The Township is aware of reports of power surges that caused an electrical smell and loss of power to homes in town,” Marino said in a statement. “We are actively engaged in conversations with JCP&L and they are investigating. We will report the findings as soon as we are able to. Should you experience any smell of burning or smoke, please call 911. Also, please report any issues you may have experienced to JCP&L at 1-888-544-4877 (1-888-LIGHTSS).”

On Tuesday, JCP&L spokesman Christopher Hoenig told RNJ that the company had identified and fixed the problem.

“JCP&L began receiving reports of voltage issues overnight Sunday into Monday. An investigation located an issue along power lines on County Route 510 and completed repairs to that [Monday] night,” Hoenig said.
