Powerball jackpot climbs to $950M, sixth-largest in game’s history
The Powerball jackpot has surged to an estimated $950 million for Saturday night’s drawing, making it the sixth-largest prize in the game’s history and the biggest advertised jackpot in more than a year.
The prize has an estimated cash value of $428.9 million. The jackpot rolled over after no ticket matched all six numbers drawn Wednesday night: white balls 9, 12, 22, 41, 61 and red Powerball 25. The Power Play multiplier was 4.
Six tickets won prizes worth $1 million or more Wednesday. Winning $1 million tickets were sold in Arizona, New York and Virginia, while tickets in Mississippi, Ohio and Virginia won $2 million by adding the Power Play option. Another 40 tickets won $50,000, and 10 tickets won $200,000.
In the Double Play drawing, a ticket in South Dakota won $500,000 after matching all five black balls. Double Play is a $1 add-on feature that gives players another chance to win up to $10 million.
Saturday’s drawing will be the 39th since the jackpot was last won in California on May 31. If a player wins, they can choose between the annuitized prize of $950 million — paid in 30 installments over 29 years — or a lump-sum cash payout of $428.9 million, before taxes.
Powerball tickets are $2 per play and are sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Since launching in 1992, Powerball has helped generate more than $36 billion for public programs supported by U.S. lotteries.
Drawings take place every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. ET in Tallahassee, Fla., and are live streamed on Powerball.com.
The overall odds of winning any prize are 1 in 24.9, while the odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million.
