Rabies alert issued after skunk tests positive in Sussex County

SUSSEX COUNTY, N.J. — The Newton Animal Control has issued a rabies alert after a skunk found near the town line of Hampton and Frankford tested positive for the virus.

Officials are urging residents to ensure their pets are up to date on rabies vaccinations and to avoid contact with wild or stray animals.

“If you notice any animal acting sick, unusually friendly, or aggressive, contact Animal Control right away,” the department said in a statement.

Animal Control emphasized that keeping vaccinations current is the best way to protect both pets and families from the deadly disease.

While the positive test is cause for precaution, officials reminded residents that one rabies-positive skunk does not mean every wild animal is infected.
