Raccoon tests positive for rabies in Hunterdon County
RARITAN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — A raccoon tested positive for rabies on Wednesday, according to the Hunterdon County Department of Health.
Officials said the animal may have exposed individuals between May 1 and May 15. Residents who believe they may have had contact with the raccoon during that time are urged to contact their primary care physician or visit the Hunterdon Medical Center Emergency Room to discuss possible exposure and whether post-exposure prophylaxis treatment is needed.
Health officials emphasized the importance of avoiding contact with stray or wild animals, noting that saliva from infected animals is considered infectious.
All pet owners are advised to ensure that their cats, dogs and livestock are vaccinated against rabies either through their veterinarian or at a municipal rabies clinic. A list of upcoming free rabies clinics is available on the Hunterdon County Department of Health website at www.co.hunterdon.nj.us/health/rabiesclinics.html.
