Raccoon tests positive for rabies in Sussex County
BYRAM TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) — A raccoon found in Byram Township has tested positive for rabies, prompting a public advisory from local animal control officials.
Hopatcong Animal Control reported that the raccoon was collected April 30 on Stanhope Road and later confirmed to be infected with the rabies virus.
Rabies is a life-threatening disease that affects the nervous system of mammals, including humans, and is typically spread through bites or saliva from infected animals.
Officials emphasized that a single confirmed case does not mean all wildlife in the area is infected but urged residents to remain cautious.
Common signs of rabies in animals include unusual or aggressive behavior, excessive drooling, difficulty walking, paralysis, seizures and wild animals appearing unusually friendly or active during daylight hours.
Residents are advised not to approach wild or stray animals and to report any suspicious behavior to authorities. Pet owners are also reminded to ensure their animals are up to date on rabies vaccinations, which are required by law.
Officials said pets should be closely monitored outdoors and kept away from unknown animals to reduce the risk of exposure.
Residents can report concerns to Byram Police dispatch or Hopatcong Animal Control.
