Ray Kietrys Memorial Fundraiser underway to honor Hackettstown’s beloved umpire

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ (Warren County) – For over two decades, Ray Kietrys, a proud member of the Hackettstown High School Class of 1967, served as the “house umpire” for the Hackettstown Men’s Softball League, umpiring three games a night, five nights a week, at Tannery Field.

Known for his trained eye, fair calls, and authoritative presence behind the plate, Ray was not just an umpire — he was a beloved figure who built strong camaraderie with every player on the field.

A professionally trained umpire, Ray attended the Major League Umpire Development School in Florida and worked in professional baseball with the New York/Penn minor leagues. His deep knowledge of the game and his ability to command respect on the field made him a staple of local sports. Few calls were ever disputed, a testament to his expertise and integrity.

Ray passed away in November 2021, leaving behind a legacy of sportsmanship and dedication to the game. To honor his contributions to the Hackettstown community, the Ray Kietrys Memorial Committee has been established. The committee is raising funds to install a granite monument and a bench at Tannery Field, a place that Ray loved and where he left an indelible mark over the years.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help raise the necessary funds for the memorial. To donate, click here. If you would prefer to donate via check, please make it payable to the Ray Kietrys Memorial Fund and mail it to: 180 Riva Drive, Hackettstown, NJ 07840.

Donations of any size are greatly appreciated, and sharing the cause with others will help tremendously.

“On behalf of Ray’s friends, family, and the Ray Kietrys Memorial Committee, we thank everyone for helping to honor one of Hackettstown’s greats,” said Krista Roberts and Patricia Kietrys, who are organizing the fundraiser.
