Readington Township kestrel recovery program underway with installation of nest boxes

READINGTON TOWNSHIP, NJ (Hunterdon County) – The Readington Open Space Advisory Board (OSAB) has officially launched its kestrel recovery program, continuing its efforts to restore and protect the local kestrel population. Last fall, the initiative began with the installation of kestrel nest boxes, and the township plans to add 55 boxes over the next five years.

On Friday, local volunteers teamed up with NJ State Fish & Wildlife to install three kestrel boxes along the Lazy Brook Greenway. Starting next month, volunteers will monitor the boxes for eggs, marking an important milestone in the program aimed at supporting this threatened species.

“As the OSAB works to preserve our open space, we are also focused on its stewardship, protecting and restoring wildlife, including kestrels, bald eagles, bluebirds, wood ducks, and bobcats,” said Lisa Routel, an OSAB member.

In 2026, the program will expand to include wood ducks, further enhancing the township’s commitment to wildlife conservation and habitat restoration.
