Red Cross urges blood, platelet donations as supply remains vulnerable; New Jersey drives scheduled through September
NEW JERSEY — The American Red Cross is urging people to donate blood or platelets this month as the blood supply remains vulnerable after recovering from critically low levels during a summer blood shortage.
Donors of all blood types are needed to help maintain the supply of blood products for patients.
Those who donate from Sept. 1-20 will receive an exclusive Red Cross x Hello Kitty plush mascot clip and surprise sticker pack while supplies last. Those who donate from Sept. 21-Oct. 18 will receive a $15 e-gift card to a merchant of their choice.
The Red Cross is also marking the 85th anniversary of Dr. Charles R. Drew’s appointment as the first medical director of the Red Cross Blood Program. A short documentary, “Iconic Excellence,” highlighting Drew’s life and contributions will be available beginning Sept. 18 on the Red Cross YouTube channel.
