Resident suffers severe burns in 2-alarm Sussex County house fire
WANTAGE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) — One person suffered severe burns Wednesday afternoon after a fire broke out at a home on Gemmer Road in Wantage Township, according to emergency responders.
Firefighters were dispatched shortly after 1 p.m. to a reported residential structure fire on Gemmer Road. Crews from the Colesville Fire Company responded along with Beemerville Fire Department, Sussex Fire Department and the Hardyston Township Volunteer Fire Department.
According to the Colesville Fire Company, the first arriving chief confirmed heavy fire showing from the front of the three-story wood-frame residence and requested a working fire assignment. A second alarm was requested minutes later as additional resources responded.
Firefighters launched an aggressive interior attack and brought the fire under control in approximately 15 minutes, according to the fire company. Second-alarm units were later released while crews remained on scene to conduct overhaul and mop-up operations.
High Point Regional EMS reported the home’s occupant suffered first-, second- and third-degree burns. The patient was treated at the scene before being transported to Garnet Medical Center.
The cause of the fire was not immediately released.
The Colesville Fire Company thanked its mutual aid partners, including High Point Regional EMS, Wantage Township Office of Emergency Management, Montague Volunteer Fire Department and the additional responding and standby agencies that assisted at the scene.
The fire company also asked the community to keep the affected resident in their thoughts during the recovery process.
