Route 31 southbound lane and ramp closures begin Friday in Hunterdon County

Route 31 southbound ramp to Old Route 22 detoured for several weeks

CLINTON, NJ (Hunterdon County) – The right lane on Route 31 southbound is scheduled to be closed Friday for the next several months as the Route 31, I-78/Route 22 to Grayrock Road pavement reconstruction project advances in Clinton.

In addition, the Route 31 southbound ramp to Old Route 22/Route 173/Annandale is scheduled to be closed and detoured for several weeks.

Beginning at 1:00 p.m., Friday, March 21, the right lane on Route 31 southbound is scheduled to be closed between Grayrock Avenue to approximately Country Club Drive until the summer. At least one lane will be maintained.

In addition, beginning at 1:00 p.m., Friday, March 21, the Route 31 southbound ramp to Old Route 22/Route 173/Annandale is scheduled to be closed and detoured for several weeks. The closures are necessary for concrete removal and the full reconstruction of the right lane on Route 31 southbound.

Route 31 southbound ramp to Old Route 22/Annadale Detour:

  • Motorists on Route 31 southbound wishing to take the ramp to Old Route 22/Route 173/Annandale/U-turn will be directed to continue on Route 31 southbound
  • Take the ramp to I-78/Route 22 westbound/Phillipsburg
  • Follow Center Street
  • Turn right onto Old Highway 22/Route 173

The $24.8 million federally funded Route 31, I-78/Route 22 to Grayrock Road pavement reconstruction project will replace deteriorated concrete pavement with full depth asphalt reconstruction of the roadway in Clinton, Hunterdon County. In addition, the project will realign the intersection of Center Street eastbound and Route 31 southbound to improve sight distance.

The acceleration lane from I-78/Route 22 westbound to Route 31 northbound will be extended to provide more space to merge. The project also includes drainage improvements, guiderail replacement, lighting and overhead sign installation, and concrete deck repairs on the bridges. The project is expected to be completed by fall 2026.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website for construction updates and real-time travel information.
