Route 31 southbound right shoulder closed Tuesday as widening project begins in Flemington

FLEMINGTON, NJ (Hunterdon County) – Route 31 southbound is scheduled to have a right shoulder closure starting Tuesday, April 1, as a roadway widening project begins in Flemington.

From 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1, the right shoulder on Route 31 southbound will be closed between Wescott Drive/CR 600 and Walter Foran Boulevard/CR 523 in Flemington.

The closure is necessary to install drums for a long-term shoulder closure, which is expected to remain in place until fall 2025. Traffic will be maintained on Route 31 southbound. Motorists are advised to slow down, use caution, and expect delays when driving through the work zone.

The $3.6 million federally funded roadway widening project will reconfigure portions of Route 31 southbound between Wescott Drive/CR 600 and Walter Foran Boulevard/CR 523 to accommodate two 11-foot-wide travel lanes and an eight-foot-wide shoulder throughout the corridor.

In addition to the roadway reconfiguration, the project will also upgrade traffic signals at the Route 31 southbound and Minneakoning Intersection, construct ADA-compliant curb ramps and sidewalks, reconstruct the left-turn lane and center median, improve drainage, relocate utilities, and repave the roadway.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website at www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
