Roxbury Fire Department urges residents to keep hydrants clear year-round

ROXBURY TOWNSHIP, N.J. — The Roxbury Township Fire Department is reminding residents that keeping fire hydrants clear isn’t just a winter task. Overgrown vegetation, tall grass and bushes can block access just as much as snow — and every second counts in an emergency.

“When hydrants are blocked, it slows down our ability to get water on a fire,” the department said in a public safety message. “That delay can cost property, homes — even lives.”

The department advises maintaining at least three feet of clearance on all sides of a hydrant, trimming weeds, bushes or branches that may block access or visibility, and making sure hydrants are visible from the road.

“If you can’t see it, we can’t either,” the department said. “Let’s work together to keep your neighborhood safe — clear those hydrants.”
