Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office seeks fugitive wanted on assault, weapons charges

SOMERSET COUNTY, N.J. — The Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office is asking for the public’s help locating a man named as its “Fugitive of the Month” for March who is wanted on assault and weapons-related charges.

Authorities said Mateo D. Maldonado-Bencebi, 40, is wanted by the prosecutor’s office Fugitive Unit after failing to appear in court on charges stemming from an incident in Somerville in October 2025.

According to the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office, Maldonado-Bencebi faces one count of third-degree aggravated assault and one count of possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Officials said Maldonado-Bencebi’s last known address was in Somerville.

He is described as 5 feet 7 inches tall and about 150 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. Authorities said he has tattoos including the word “Bibi” on his left hand and a cross on his neck.

Anyone with information about Maldonado-Bencebi’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Fugitive Unit at 908-231-7100 or submit a tip through the STOPit app, using the access code SOMERSETNJ. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through the Somerset County Crime Stoppers tip line at 1-888-577-TIPS (8477).
