Son convicted of murder in Christmas Eve killing of father in Morris County

MORRISTOWN, N.J. (Morris County) — A jury has convicted a former Boonton Township man of murder and weapons offenses in connection with the 2023 killing of his father, county officials announced.

Morris County Prosecutor Robert J. Carroll, Chief of Detectives Robert M. McNally, Morris County Sheriff James Gannon and Boonton Township Police Chief Thomas Cacciabeve said Kyle Meyer, 35, formerly of Boonton Township, was found guilty following a seven-day trial.

The jury returned its verdicts on Dec. 15, 2025, finding Meyer guilty of first-degree murder, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon.

The trial was presided over by Superior Court Judge Ralph E. Amirata, who scheduled sentencing for Feb. 6, 2026. Meyer will remain in custody pending sentencing.

Authorities said the charges stem from a homicide reported on Dec. 24, 2023. At about 1:15 p.m., law enforcement officers were dispatched to a residence on Old Denville Road in Boonton Township in response to an emergency call. Gregory Meyer, 61, was found dead inside the home.

An investigation identified Kyle Meyer, the victim’s son, as a suspect. Investigators said the father and son lived together at the residence. Kyle Meyer was later located and detained in Paterson at approximately 9 p.m. the same day.

The Morris County Medical Examiner’s Office determined Gregory Meyer died from exsanguination due to multiple injuries and ruled the manner of death a homicide. Investigators determined a battery-operated pole saw was used as the weapon in the killing.

Prosecutor Carroll thanked the agencies involved in the investigation, including the Boonton Township Police Department, the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, the Morris County Sheriff’s Office and the Paterson Police Department.

Carroll also acknowledged Supervising Assistant Prosecutor Tara Wang and Assistant Prosecutor Kyle Herda, who prosecuted the case, as well as Boonton Township Sgt. Christopher Chicoris and Detective Peter Ricciardi, and Morris County Prosecutor’s Office Lt. Michael Gomez, Sgt. Matthew Magnone, Detective Gregory Federici and Detective Jenna Powers for their roles in the investigation and prosecution.
