Sussex County Community College to launch junior varsity baseball team in 2026
NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — Sussex County Community College will introduce a junior varsity baseball team as part of its athletic program beginning in the 2026 season, officials announced. The addition aims to provide student-athletes with expanded opportunities for development both on and off the field.
The JV team will serve as a developmental program supporting SCCC’s varsity baseball team. It will offer more players the chance to compete in a structured environment, receive additional coaching, and refine their skills as they work toward the varsity level.
“We are excited to launch the JV baseball team as part of our ongoing efforts to build a strong, inclusive athletic program,” Athletic Director Todd Poltersdorf said. “This initiative allows us to support more student-athletes in reaching their full potential and strengthens the pipeline to our varsity team.”
The new team will play a limited but competitive schedule against regional JV and club teams, with an emphasis on fundamental skill development, teamwork, and academic success.
“I’m thrilled to have the expansion of our program with the introduction of a JV/development team,” Head Coach Ramadan Mehmedi said. “It provides more opportunities for skill development, game experience, and leadership growth, while reinforcing our commitment to building a strong, competitive, and inclusive baseball culture.”
Tryouts and recruitment for the JV team are scheduled to begin in fall 2025. Students interested in participating are encouraged to contact Mehmedi at rmehmedi@sussex.edu.
The addition of the JV baseball team aligns with SCCC’s broader mission to promote student growth through athletics, academics, and community engagement. More information about the athletics program is available at www.sussexskylanders.com.
