Sussex County man sentenced to 5 years in prison for possessing more than 1,000 child sexual abuse images
NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — A Franklin Borough man has been sentenced to five years in state prison after pleading guilty to possessing more than 1,000 images of child sexual exploitation and abuse material, according to the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office.
Ryan Smith, 25, was sentenced July 17 by Superior Court Judge Janine M. Allen at the Sussex County Courthouse in Newton, Sussex County Prosecutor Daniel M. Perez announced.
Smith previously pleaded guilty to second-degree endangering the welfare of a child by possessing child sexual exploitation or abuse material (CSAM). During his guilty plea, Smith admitted to possessing more than 1,000 images of CSAM, prosecutors said.
In addition to the five-year prison sentence, Smith was ordered to serve Parole Supervision for Life, comply with the requirements of Megan’s Law, submit a DNA sample, forfeit all seized items and pay $3,055 in mandatory fees and penalties.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the charges stemmed from a Franklin Borough Police Department investigation after authorities received information indicating Smith was in possession of child sexual abuse material depicting minors.
