Sussex County recognizes MS Awareness Week, Take Down Tobacco Day with proclamations

NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — The Sussex County Board of County Commissioners recognized two public health initiatives during its March 25 meeting, issuing proclamations for MS Awareness Week and Take Down Tobacco National Day of Action.

Commissioner Chris Carney presented a proclamation designating March 8–14 as MS Awareness Week in Sussex County, highlighting efforts by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society to support those living with the disease and advance research. The proclamation was accepted by Tammy Quasius, a Sussex County resident and representative of the MS Society’s New Jersey Metro Chapter.

Quasius encouraged community members to get involved through volunteering, donations and support for individuals affected by multiple sclerosis.

Commissioner David Silverthorne then introduced a second proclamation recognizing April 1 as Take Down Tobacco National Day of Action. The initiative, led by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, aims to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco and nicotine use among youth.

Student representatives Avery Wuhrl and Abigail Lanza from High Point Regional High School’s Incorruptible chapter accepted the proclamation on behalf of local anti-tobacco efforts.

Following the meeting, Carney emphasized the importance of continued awareness and advocacy.

“The MS Society has made remarkable progress both in New Jersey and across the nation. We hope this recognition helps raise further awareness and brings us closer to finding a cure for those living with multiple sclerosis.”

Silverthorne also highlighted the evolving nature of tobacco use among young people.

“It’s no longer just about traditional cigarettes. Young people today are increasingly exposed to modern nicotine products such as vapes and e-cigarettes. It is critical that we continue to educate the public about the risks associated with these products.”

Officials encouraged residents to learn more through the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.
