Sussex County seniors eligible for free produce benefits through farmers market program

NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — Eligible Sussex County seniors can receive free fresh produce through the 2026 Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, county officials announced.

The program, offered through the Sussex County Department of Health and Human Services Division of Senior Services, provides qualifying residents age 60 and older with a one-time $40 electronic benefit in the form of a QR code that can be used to purchase locally grown fruits and vegetables at participating New Jersey farm stands.

Officials said participating seniors will receive a list of local community farms enrolled in the program along with their information packet.

Distribution of the electronic benefits will begin June 1 and continue through Sept. 30 at the Division of Senior Services office located at One Spring St. in Newton.

To qualify, applicants must be Sussex County residents and meet income eligibility guidelines. Officials said annual income limits are currently set at $29,526 for single individuals and $40,034 for married couples. Monthly income limits are $2,461 for individuals and $3,337 for couples. The limits remain in effect through June 30, 2027.

Applicants are required to provide proof of age, residency and income when applying for the program.

Acceptable proof of residency and age includes a driver’s license or utility or phone bill. Proof of income may include a 2025 income tax return, Social Security benefit statement, current pay stub or SNAP verification.

Officials noted that PAAD cards are no longer accepted as proof of eligibility. Seniors unable to provide income documentation may self-declare their income by signing a form.

Benefits must be used by Nov. 30, 2026.

County officials encouraged all eligible seniors to participate in the program and noted that homebound residents may receive benefits through a designated proxy.
