Sussex County to host Older Americans Month celebration on May 15

AUGUSTA, N.J. (Sussex County) — Sussex County officials will host an Older Americans Month celebration in May aimed at promoting wellness, independence and community engagement among older residents.

The event, organized by the Sussex County Department of Health and Human Services’ Division of Senior Services, will take place May 15 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sussex County Fairgrounds Richards Building in Augusta.

This year’s theme, “Champion Your Health,” highlights prevention, wellness and personal responsibility as key elements of healthy aging. Organizers said the event will feature information, educational resources, social opportunities and entertainment.

“This year’s theme is about making choices to support your mind as well as your body. Small, consistent actions, from preventative care to staying socially connected, can help people maintain their health and independence as they age,” said Lorraine Hentz, Deputy County Administrator of the County of Sussex.

Officials said the event is designed to encourage older adults to take an active role in their health by accessing preventive care, advocating for themselves and making informed decisions that support long-term independence.

Space is limited, and pre-paid registration is required. The cost is $8 per person for registrations received by May 11 and $12 per person afterward.

Checks should be made payable to the Senior Services Trust Fund and mailed to the Sussex County Division of Senior Services, One Spring St., Newton, N.J. 07860.

For more information, residents can call 973-579-0555, ext. 1277, or email seniorservices@sussex.nj.us.
