Sussex Tech among 40 schools nationwide competing for $1 million prize in T-Mobile competition

SUSSEX COUNTY, N.J. — Sussex County Technical School is one of just 40 schools nationwide, and the only school in New Jersey, still competing in T-Mobile’s Friday Night 5G Lights competition, with a chance to win up to $1 million for improvements to its athletic facilities.

Students and their families recently appeared before the Sussex County Board of County Commissioners to discuss the school’s progress in the national competition and encourage community members to vote before the current round ends Sunday, Oct. 25.

Sussex Tech began the competition alongside approximately 2,500 schools nationwide. Through social media outreach and community support, the school advanced through several rounds, earning $5,000 and $25,000 prizes along the way, for a total of $30,000 so far.

The school is now among 10 finalists in the competition’s Eastern Division, vying for a $250,000 prize package that includes a weight room makeover and a $5,000 student grant.

If Sussex Tech wins its division, it will advance to the final round against three other schools for the competition’s $1 million grand prize.

During their presentation to county commissioners, students and families discussed how the funding could improve the school’s athletic facilities and help bring the excitement of Friday night football to Sussex Tech.

The improvements would benefit not only the football program but also other athletic teams that use the school’s facilities.

Sussex County Commissioner Director Jill Space expressed support for the school’s efforts and encouraged the community to help Sussex Tech advance.

“This is an amazing opportunity for Sussex Tech! We have already been hanging signs around the county and we are sharing this information everywhere we can. We will do everything we can to help the school and wish them the best of luck with this competition.”

The Sussex County Board of County Commissioners is encouraging community members to vote daily and share information about the competition to help the school secure enough votes to advance.

Voting for the current round remains open through Sunday, Oct. 25.
