Teens charged in social media bomb threat at Mount Olive Middle School
MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, NJ (Morris County) – Two teens have been charged in connection with a social media bomb threat at Mount Olive Middle School, according to police.
On Friday, Oct. 25, the Mount Olive Police Department was contacted by the Mount Olive Township School District regarding a threat posted on social media, police said.
The investigation focused on the anonymous bomb threat directed at Mount Olive Middle School, which had been posted on social media that same day, police said.
The incident was thoroughly investigated, and it was quickly determined that the social media threat was not credible. At no point during the investigation was the safety or security of the students or school facilities compromised. As a result, the juveniles responsible for the threat were identified, police said.
On Friday, Nov. 1, a 14-year-old boy was charged with the fourth-degree crime of cyber harassment, and a 13-year-old girl was also charged with the same crime for posting the threat on social media, police said.
Both teens were released to a parent or guardian pending adjudication in court, police said.
“The safety and security of our students and schools remain our highest priority,” said Mount Olive School District Superintendent Dr. Sumit Bangia. “We will continue to work closely with law enforcement to ensure swift and thorough responses to any threats against our educational community.”
Mount Olive Police Chief Michael Spitzer emphasized, “The Mount Olive Police Department, in partnership with the Mount Olive School District, maintains a zero-tolerance policy for acts that threaten our schools. We will vigorously investigate all such incidents and pursue appropriate legal action against those responsible.”
