Three Roxbury High School students accepted into NJ All-State Band
ROXBURY TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — Three Roxbury High School students have been accepted into the New Jersey All-State Band following competitive statewide auditions hosted by the New Jersey Music Educators Association.
The auditions were held Jan. 24 and featured students from every county in the state competing for seats in one of two honor ensembles. To qualify, students first had to earn placement in their respective regional bands. Auditions required students to perform scales, a collegiate-level solo piece for their instrument and complete a sight-reading component.
The Roxbury students selected for the All-State ensembles are Alexander Fullam, trombone, Wind Ensemble; Caden Scire, trumpet, Symphonic Band; and Liam Schlam, tuba, Symphonic Band. Fullam earned the top overall score in the state for trombone.
The students participated in rehearsals before performing at the Atlantic City Convention Hall on Feb. 21 in conjunction with the NJMEA annual conference. A second concert scheduled for the following day at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark was canceled due to a snowstorm.
In addition to his All-State selection, Fullam, a senior, received the NJMEA Governor’s Award for Band. The Governor’s Awards in Arts Education program was established in 1980 to recognize student achievement and leadership in arts education across New Jersey. Fullam was selected from a large pool of applicants and honored at the NJMEA convention Feb. 20.
“Congratulations Alex on your years of hard work and dedication that culminated in the reception of this prestigious award! Congratulations to the three RHS participants on their acceptance to these prestigious ensembles. Their hard work and dedication are to be commended and we wish them all the best for a great performance,” said Jeffrey Conrad, Roxbury High School director of bands.
