Tractor-trailer overturns, spills sludge on I-80 in Essex County; no injuries reported

FAIRFIELD TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Essex County) — A tractor-trailer overturned on Interstate 80 early Monday morning, spilling non-hazardous sludge and prompting a cleanup that caused delays but resulted in no injuries, according to the New Jersey State Police.

Troopers responded at 2:52 a.m. to a crash on I-80 west near milepost 48.8 in Fairfield Township, NJSP spokesman Trooper II Christopher Postorino said.

A preliminary investigation found that a Mack truck traveling eastbound lost directional control, causing its trailer to hit the left guardrail and overturn, Postorino said. The trailer was carrying non-hazardous sludge, which spilled and was later cleaned up.

No injuries were reported at the scene. The crash remains under investigation, and no additional information is available, Postorino said.
