BAR HARBOR, ME (Hancock County) – Two people died after a plane that took off from Morris County crashed in Maine Thursday afternoon, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

A single-engine Cirrus SR22 took off from Morristown Municipal Airport and crashed on approach to Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport at around 12:25 p.m., the FAA said.

The pilot and passenger both died in the crash. The plane was destroyed in the crash.

Authorities did not immediately identify the two people who died in the crash.

The plane is registered to Miller High Life Aviation LLC in Charlestown, South Carolina, according to FAA records.

A National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigator is expected to be on scene Friday to begin documenting the scene, examining the aircraft, NTSB told RNJ. The aircraft will then be recovered and taken to a secure facility for further evaluation.

NTSB investigations involve three primary areas: the pilot, the aircraft and the operating environment.

The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation with assistance from the FAA.
