WalletHub: New Jersey is 2025’s 4th worst state for military retirees

NEW JERSEY – New Jersey is 2025’s 4th worst state for military retirees, according to a study done by WalletHub.

With May being Military Appreciation Month and Memorial Day approaching, the personal-finance website WalletHub Monday released its report on 2025’s Best & Worst States for Military Retirees.

To help troops plan their years after service, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 28 key indicators of retirement-friendliness toward veterans. The data set ranges from job opportunities for veterans to housing affordability to the quality of VA hospitals.

Military Retirement in New Jersey (1=Best; 25=Avg.):

  • Overall Rank: 48th
  • 51st – Veterans per Capita
  • 35th – Number of VA Health Facilities per Number of Veterans
  • 36th – % of Homeless Veterans
  • 50th – Veteran Job Opportunities
  • 39th – Housing Affordability
  • 50th – % of Veteran-Owned Businesses
  • 11th – Number of VA Benefits-Administration Facilities per Number of Veterans
  • 41st – Quality of VA Hospitals

Memorial Day Facts

  • 100 – Members of the 119th Congress have served in the U.S. military, only the 5th time in the last 50 years with an increase at all in the total veterans elected.
