Warren County Commissioners honor 50 Years of service by Abilities of Northwest Jersey with proclamation

WARREN COUNTY, NJ – The Warren County Commissioners celebrated the 50 years of good works by the nonprofit Abilities of Northwest Jersey, Inc., presenting Abilities CEO Cynthia Wildermuth with a proclamation praising the organization’s half-century of service to individuals with disabilities.

More than 50 years ago, a group of 14 grassroot advocates, including parents and community members, came together to incorporate Abilities of Northwest Jersey as an organization fulfilling the vocational needs of adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

Starting as a small workshop serving 13 individuals in Washington, NJ and partnering with local companies, this group of advocates had a mission to improve the employability and quality of life for people with disabilities, leading to their self-worth and independence. The organization was legally incorporated in 1974.

Since then, Abilities of Northwest Jersey has grown exponentially, serving individuals of all levels of abilities, through the expansion of various programs and services. It now serves more than 375 individuals and their families and is considered the disability employment expert for this region.

In accepting the proclamation at the Board of County Commissioners meeting held at the Pohatcong Township Municipal Building, Wildermuth noted that October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the value and talent workers with disabilities add to America’s workplaces and economy. NDEAM’s purpose is to confirm the commitment to ensuring disabled workers have access to good jobs, every month of every year, leading to this year’s official theme: “Access to Good Jobs for All.”
