Warren County man in critical condition after apparent drowning at Atlantic Highlands park

ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, N.J. (Monmouth County) — A 62-year-old man from Phillipsburg is in critical condition after being pulled from the water near Pompamora Point Park in Atlantic Highlands on Sunday morning, authorities said.

According to the Atlantic Highlands Police Department, officers from both Atlantic Highlands and Highlands, along with fire and EMS personnel from both towns, responded to a report of a possible drowning at approximately 11:37 a.m. on Aug. 3. The incident occurred off the Henry Hudson Trail near the bayfront park.

Emergency responders administered lifesaving measures, including CPR and multiple shocks from an automated external defibrillator (AED) in an effort to restore a pulse.

The man was transported to Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank, where he remains in the intensive care unit in critical condition, officials said Tuesday.

A preliminary investigation by local authorities and Monmouth County Park Rangers indicates the man had been clamming in the bay prior to the incident. The circumstances do not appear suspicious, police said.
