Washington Fire Department mourns the passing of former Chief Charles F. “Charlie” Wright

WASHINGTON BOROUGH, NJ (Warren County) – The Washington Fire Department is deeply saddened to announce the passing of former Chief Charles F. “Charlie” Wright, who passed away at the age of 89.

Charlie, a longtime member of the department, was a dedicated firefighter, mentor, and leader whose contributions to both the local community and the broader firefighting profession spanned over six decades.

Charlie joined the Washington Fire Department in January 1956, and he remained an active member of the department throughout his life. As recently as this spring, Charlie presented a basic pump operations class for department members, showcasing his commitment to training the next generation of firefighters. His involvement in the department included attending meetings, relief association gatherings, and training drills well into his later years.

Charlie served as the department’s Chief in 1980-1981 and held several key positions throughout his career, including Assistant Chief, Captain, and Lieutenant. He also dedicated many years of service as the secretary of the Relief Association, following in the footsteps of his brother, Fletcher.

Beyond his local service, Charlie made significant contributions to the fire service on a state and national level. He was the first person to serve as the Warren County Fire Marshal and was an active member of the New Jersey State Fire Chiefs Association. He also served as President of the New Jersey Chapter of the International Society of Fire Service Instructors.

A respected instructor, Charlie taught at various fire academies, including the Warren and Hunterdon County Fire Academies, the Sussex County Fire Academy, and the Northampton County, Pennsylvania Fire School. He also played a role in teaching critical courses such as Water Shuttle and Pump Operations at the New Jersey Fire College. For many years, Charlie served as the director of the Hunterdon County Fire Academy, where he influenced and educated countless firefighters.

Charlie was a proud member of the Washington Fire Department Exempt Fireman’s Association and was a life member of both the New Jersey State Fireman’s Association and the New Jersey State Exempt Fireman’s Association.

Firefighting ran in the Wright family, with Charlie following a proud tradition of service. His father, brothers, and son, Jeff, all served in the Washington Fire Department. Charlie’s wife, Shirley, and daughter, Jolene, both served as Presidents of the Washington Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 23, at Faith Discovery Church on Brass Castle Road in Washington Township. Visitation for friends and firefighters will take place from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM, with the funeral service beginning at noon.

Charlie will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the countless members of the fire service whose lives he touched. His legacy of service, dedication, and leadership will continue to inspire the Washington Fire Department for years to come.
