Washington Township police warn of text scam targeting toll payers
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, NJ (Warren County) — The Washington Township Police Department is warning residents about a new text message scam in which fraudsters claim that unpaid tolls must be paid immediately to avoid fines or a suspended driver’s license.
The scam text appears to come from an unknown number, often with an international area code such as +63 964 914 6529, which is likely based outside of the U.S. The message contains a link designed to mimic the official websites of toll providers like EZ-Pass, asking the recipient to click and provide payment information.
Police strongly advise residents to refrain from clicking on the link or providing any personal or banking information. The link may lead to malware or result in the theft of sensitive data.
“Do not click on the link and do not provide any personal or banking information. Do not click the link- it could install malware or steal your information. Verify with your toll provider by visiting their official website or calling their customer service directly,” police said.
The police also encourage victims of this scam to report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at https://reportfraud.ftc.gov and contact their state’s toll authority to report the fraud.
“Scammers are getting more sophisticated with the use of AI, so staying vigilant is key,” police said.
