2 arrested following traffic stop in Morris County

MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, NJ (Morris County) -Two Morris County residents were arrested following a traffic stop Saturday night in Mount Olive Township.

On May 18, at 11:32 p.m., an officer observed a gray Ford F150 traveling eastbound on Route 46 at a slow rate of speed with only one functioning headlight, police said.

As the officer followed the vehicle, they passed two other patrol vehicles on that were stopped in the right Lane of travel on Route 46 on another call for service. The F150 nearly collided with the patrol vehicles before changing lanes to go around them, police said.

The officer then stopped the truck in the area of East Forrest Road and made contact with the driver, who was identified as Idelsi Arguetaportillo, 41, of Flanders. As the officer spoke with Arguetaportillo, the officer detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage and noted that he appeared to be impaired, police said.

The passenger, who was identified as Alisandro Rodriguez, 42, of Netcong Borough had an open bottle of liquor at his feet, police said.

Arguetaportillo was asked to exit his vehicle where he refused field sobriety testing and was arrested. Rodriguez was also intoxicated, and the officers determined that he needed a ride to his residence for his safety, police said.

Once Rodriguez was secured in the officer’s patrol vehicle, he took out a pocketknife and cut through the seatbelt. He was then removed from the vehicle and arrested, police said.

Arguetaportillo was charged with DWI, reckless driving, open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, maintenance of lamps, and failure to change lanes for emergency vehicles.

Rodriguez was charged with criminal mischief, possession of weapons for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of weapons.

Both were released pending court appearances.
