3 Byram Township police officers promoted

BYRAM TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – The Byram Township Police Department announced that three officers were promoted during the Byram Township Council meeting, which took place on Feb. 6.

Lieutenant Daniel Dewald was promoted to the rank of Police Chief. Chief DeWald started his career in 1999 with the New Jersey Department of Corrections.  He was hired by the Byram Township Police Department in July of 2001, and graduated from the Morris County Public Safety Training Academy.

He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2016 and then to the rank of Lieutenant in 2022.

Sergeant Guy M. Mariani was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. Lieutenant Mariani was hired by the Byram Township Police Department in July of 2000, and graduated from the Morris County Public Safety Training Academy in the 56th Basic Police class.  In June of 2005, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.

Lieutenant Mariani holds a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from American Military University and is currently an adjunct instructor in the Criminal Justice Department of Sussex County Community College.

Patrolman Kevin Perry was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.  Sergeant Perry began his career at the Morris County Sheriff’s Office in 2013 and graduated from the Morris County Public Safety Training Academy. He was then hired by the Byram Township Police Department in 2016.  Sergeant Perry is an arson investigator and certified in crisis intervention training.

Sergeant Perry also holds an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science from County College of Morris.

Jay Edwards

Born and raised in Northwest NJ, Jay has a degree in Communications and has had a life-long interest in local radio and various styles of music. Jay has held numerous jobs over the years such as stunt car driver, bartender, voice-over artist, traffic reporter (award winning), NY Yankee maintenance crewmember and peanut farm worker. His hobbies include mountain climbing, snowmobiling, cooking, performing stand-up comedy and he is an avid squirrel watcher. Jay has been a guest on America’s Morning Headquarters,program on The Weather Channel, and was interviewed by Sam Champion.
