4 injured, 1 flown to hospital following fiery crash on Route 31 in Hunterdon County
RARITAN TOWNSHIP, NJ (Hunterdon County) – Four people were injured, including one person who was flown to the hospital, following a fiery crash in Raritan Township on Saturday night, according to Raritan Township Police Department Lieutenant Scott Nelson.
The crash occurred on January 4, at around 11:44 p.m., at the intersection of Route 31 and Walter Foran Boulevard, Nelson said.
While en route to the scene, officers were advised by Hunterdon County Communications that one of the involved vehicles may have been on fire. Upon arrival, officers found a white Subaru with heavy front-end damage, which was also on fire, Nelson said.
Officer Phillip Canale retrieved a fire extinguisher from his patrol vehicle and was able to extinguish the fire, which appeared to be confined to the engine compartment, Nelson said.
The driver of the Subaru, a 45-year-old male from Flemington, suffered traumatic head injuries and was trapped inside the vehicle, Nelson said.
Raritan Township rescue squads and fire department personnel were able to extract the driver of the Subaru. The driver was then flown to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, authorities said.
The second vehicle involved in the crash was a Toyota Tundra pickup. The driver, a 63-year-old male from Trenton, along with his two adult children, sustained what appeared to be minor injuries. The driver was transported to Capital Health in Trenton and the two passengers were transported to Hunterdon Medical Center, authorities said.
Witnesses told police that the Subaru, traveling east on Walter Foran Boulevard, crossed over Route 31 and collided with the driver’s side of the Toyota Tundra, which was traveling north on Route 31, Nelson said.
The Raritan Township Police Department is investigating the exact cause(s) of the crash, Nelson said.
