7 injured after van crashes into state police car on I-78 in Hunterdon County

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, NJ (Hunterdon County) – Seven people were injured after a van crashed into an unoccupied state police car on I-78 in Hunterdon County early Sunday morning, according to New Jersey State Police spokesperson Sergeant Jeffrey Lebron.

The crash occurred at around 5:42 a.m. on Interstate 78 eastbound at milepost 18.4 in Clinton Township, Lebron said.

A preliminary police investigation revealed that a Ford Transit van was traveling eastbound in the center lane of I-78 when it struck an unoccupied, marked state police car, which had its emergency lights activated and was parked to divert traffic due to a prior crash investigation, Lebron said.

The driver of the Ford failed to observe the state police vehicle and subsequently rear-ended the patrol car, Lebron said.

As a result of the collision, the driver and six passengers sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to an area hospital, Lebron said.

The crash remains under investigation, Lebron said.
