2 arrested after fleeing police at speeds exceeding 100 mph in Sussex County

BYRAM TOWNSHIP, NJ – Two men were arrested after allegedly fleeing police at speeds exceeding 100 mph on Route 206 in Byram Township, according to Byram Township police.

On Sunday, Feb. 23, at around 11:11 a.m., an officer observed a white BMW traveling at a high rate of speed on Route 206 North. The officer attempted to conduct a motor vehicle stop, but the vehicle fled at speeds estimated to be over 100 mph, passing another vehicle on the shoulder, police said.

New Jersey State Police were notified as the vehicle entered Andover Borough. Shortly after, patrol officers came upon the suspect vehicle, which had slid off the roadway into the southbound lane of Route 206, police said.

As patrol officers approached the vehicle, two male suspects exited and fled on foot. The driver, later identified as Andrew Jack Acevedo of Budd Lake, ran into the woods. The passenger, Tyler A. Burwell of Hopatcong Borough, was apprehended at the scene, police said.

NJSP Helicopter and the Sussex County Sheriff’s Department K9 Unit assisted in the search.

Burwell was charged with resisting arrest and lodged in the Morris County Jail pending a court appearance, police said.

Acevedo was later apprehended by the Mount Olive Police Department on warrants from the Byram Township Police Department for resisting arrest and eluding. He was transported to the Byram Township Police Department Headquarters, where he was additionally charged with failure to report an accident, leaving the scene of an accident, fictitious plates, failure to yield the right of way to an emergency vehicle, speeding, reckless driving, careless driving, driving with a suspended license, improper passing, unsafe lane change, and following too closely.

Acevedo was lodged in the Morris County Jail pending a court appearance.
