Assemblywoman Aura Dunn provides update on I-80 repairs, legislation to support small businesses affected by construction
WHARTON BOROUGH, NJ (Morris County) – Assemblywoman Aura Dunn issued an update Sunday regarding the ongoing repairs to Interstate 80 in Wharton Borough, where recent testing revealed a significant void beneath the eastbound lanes. Although the westbound lanes remain stable, the repairs to the eastbound side are now expected to take longer than initially anticipated.
In her statement, Assemblywoman Dunn assured constituents that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) is working around the clock, with crews conducting drilling and grouting operations to stabilize the affected roadway. The assemblywoman emphasized that all necessary precautions are being taken to ensure the safety of both workers and commuters during this critical phase of repairs.
“I am in close communication with NJDOT Commissioner O’Connor and local officials to ensure that every step is being taken for a safe and long-lasting solution,” Dunn said. “We are closely monitoring the situation and working together to secure the safety of all commuters and prevent any further disruptions.”
While repairs continue, traffic detours remain in place, and motorists are being advised to follow alternate routes to avoid delays. Dunn urged travelers to plan for extra travel time and stay informed by visiting the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s real-time traffic information website, 511nj.org.
In addition to the repair update, Assemblywoman Dunn highlighted her ongoing efforts to support local businesses impacted by the I-80 construction. In September, she introduced Assembly Bill 4865, which aims to provide a temporary sales tax exemption for small businesses located within construction zones like the one currently affecting I-80. The bill has gained traction as it seeks to mitigate financial challenges faced by these businesses.
“Many local business owners are already reporting a 15-20 percent drop in revenue and foot traffic due to the construction. This legislation will provide much-needed relief to help them stay afloat during this time of disruption,” said Dunn.
The assemblywoman reiterated her commitment to ensuring that the bill passes swiftly to support businesses as they navigate the ongoing construction, and she vowed to continue working tirelessly to alleviate their financial burdens.
“I understand the inconvenience this situation has caused,” Dunn acknowledged. “Please be patient as we work to resolve the issue efficiently. Your safety is my top priority, and I will continue to closely monitor the situation to ensure the work progresses smoothly.”
Dunn closed her message by thanking constituents for their continued patience and support as efforts continue to repair I-80 and support local businesses through this challenging time.
