Crews extinguish mulch fire at Warren County business

KNOWLTON TOWNSHIP, NJ (Warren County) – A mulch fire broke out Sunday afternoon at a business in Knowlton Township.

The Knowlton Township Fire and Rescue Company was dispatched at 2:49 p.m. for a report of a smoke condition at Gary Gray Trucking’s Mulch Storage Yard on Route 46 in the Delaware section of the township.

Fire crews arrived and discovered a mulch fire smoldering deep within large bulk mulch piles.

“This type of fire is commonly found within these bulk piles where the mulch is extremely hot and damp. Spontaneous combustion can occur naturally in these piles,” the fire company said.

Large excavators were used to tear apart the piles to help cool and extinguish the deep-seated hot spots.
