13-year-old bicyclist airlifted to hospital after being struck by SUV in Morris County
MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, NJ (Morris County) — A 13-year-old boy riding his bike was struck by an SUV in Mount Olive Township Sunday evening, according to police.
At approximately 6:35 p.m., police received several 9-1-1 calls reporting a motor vehicle crash involving a bicyclist.
Upon arrival, patrol officers determined that the boy had been struck by a Ford Explorer traveling on Wolfe Road. The bicyclist, who was not wearing a protective helmet, sustained injuries and was flown to Morristown Medical Center, police said.
The investigation revealed that the Ford Explorer, driven by a 34-year-old Budd Lake resident, was heading north on Wolfe Road when the bicyclist crossed from Cassidy Road and attempted to enter the southbound lane without yielding to the SUV, which had the right of way, police said.
The investigation is ongoing; however, police said speed and cell phone use do not appear to be contributing factors for the driver, police said.
Wolfe Road was closed between Old Wolfe Road and Kings Arrow Road for approximately four hours while the investigation was conducted. The Mount Olive Police Department’s Traffic Unit and Detective Bureau were assisted by the Morris County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Section.
