Closures necessary for roadway reconstruction

CLINTON, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced that the Route 31 southbound ramps to and from Center Street in Clinton will be closed Friday and Saturday, June 6–7, as part of the ongoing $24.8 million pavement reconstruction project between I-78/Route 22 and Grayrock Road.

Beginning at 1 p.m. Friday, June 6, until 8 p.m. Saturday, June 7, the Route 31 southbound ramp to Center Street will be closed for roadway reconstruction. During this time, a detour will direct motorists on Route 31 southbound to turn right onto Grayrock Road before Center Street and then turn left onto Center Street.

In addition, starting at 4 p.m. Friday, June 6, until 8 p.m. Saturday, June 7, the Center Street ramp to Route 31 southbound will also be closed. Access to local businesses on Center Street will remain open. A posted detour will guide drivers to turn left onto Grayrock Road and then right onto Route 31 southbound.

The federally funded Route 31 reconstruction project aims to replace deteriorated concrete with full-depth asphalt, realign the Center Street intersection to improve sight distance, extend the acceleration lane from I-78/Route 22 westbound to Route 31 northbound, and make improvements to drainage, guiderails, lighting, overhead signage, and bridge decks. The project is expected to be completed by fall 2026.

All scheduled work is weather dependent. Motorists are advised to check www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and construction updates.
