FirstEnergy crews prepare for power outages as nor’easter brings strong winds and heavy rain to region

As a powerful nor’easter approaches the East Coast this weekend, FirstEnergy Corp. electric companies are mobilizing crews and resources to respond swiftly to potential power outages expected across New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland beginning Sunday.

Strong Winds, Heavy Rains, and Flooding Expected

According to FirstEnergy meteorologists, wind gusts in New Jersey could exceed 65 mph along the coast and 45–55 mph inland, accompanied by heavy rain and coastal flooding. In eastern Pennsylvania and central and eastern Maryland, winds may reach up to 45 mph. The severe weather could cause widespread outages for customers served by Jersey Central Power and Light (JCP&L) and Met-Ed.

Crews and Resources Mobilized

“FirstEnergy is ramping up staffing, mobilizing crews, and securing additional contractor and mutual assistance resources ahead of the nor’easter,” the company said in a statement. Approximately 1,500 additional personnel are being deployed to central New Jersey, where conditions are expected to be the most severe. The company is also coordinating with local agencies and officials to ensure a rapid response once the storm passes.

Power Restoration Process

In the aftermath of major storms, restoration efforts can take several days depending on the extent of the damage. Crews will first address safety hazards, such as downed wires and fallen trees, before restoring power to critical facilities and larger customer groups. Repairs to individual homes and streets may take longer, particularly in areas affected by fallen trees or damaged service lines.

Safety First

FirstEnergy emphasized that crew and public safety remain top priorities. Lineworkers will keep their buckets grounded when winds exceed 40 mph and focus on ground-level repairs until conditions improve. Flooding and saturated soil also pose significant challenges to safe restoration work.

Residents are urged to prioritize safety by:

  • Staying 30 feet away from downed wires and reporting them to 911.
  • Avoiding floodwater, which can conceal live electrical hazards.
  • Using flashlights instead of candles to reduce fire risks.
  • Keeping generators outdoors and away from windows to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.
  • Having essentials ready, including flashlights, radios, extra batteries, and nonperishable food.
