Lawmakers urge administration to detail evacuation plans for Americans in Israel
WASHINGTON, D.C. — A bipartisan group of 45 members of Congress is calling on President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio to provide a clear plan for evacuating American citizens who wish to leave Israel amid escalating violence in the region.
The lawmakers, led by Rep. Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey and Rep. Wesley Bell of Missouri, sent a letter Friday asking the administration to outline the steps being taken to assist Americans as Iran continues launching ballistic missiles at Israel. Since June 13, Iran has fired more than 350 missiles, according to officials. While most have been intercepted, strikes that penetrated defenses as of Monday have resulted in at least 24 deaths and more than 300 injuries.
“Americans in Israel are depending on our government for guidance and a pathway to safety,” the lawmakers wrote. “We understand the obstacles posed by the current security situation and the closure of Israel’s airspace. Therefore, all available options, including evacuations by land routes and sea, must be explored.”
The letter also expressed concern about the lack of information provided so far to constituents seeking assistance. The lawmakers requested a response from the administration by June 18.
