Warren County honors longtime Planning Director David Dech on retirement

WARREN COUNTY, N.J. – After nearly 37 years of service, Warren County Planning Director David K. Dech was honored with a proclamation by the Board of County Commissioners as he prepares to retire on June 27.

Dech, who spent more than three decades as head of the Planning Department, was praised for his deep knowledge, calm demeanor, and lasting impact on land use, transportation, and development throughout the county.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen Dave get upset. He’s one of the most level people I know, and one of the most knowledgeable,” said Commissioner Director Jason J. Sarnoski, who worked closely with Dech on various transportation and planning initiatives.

Over the years, Dech led numerous strategic planning efforts, including the county’s Strategic Growth Plans, Open Space and Farmland Preservation Plans, Environmental Resource Inventories, and Transportation Master Plans. He also guided Warren County through three iterations of the New Jersey State Plan and the implementation of the Highlands Act in 2008.

Commissioners highlighted Dech’s unique approach to planning—one that included firsthand experience. An avid cyclist, Dech rode every street, alley and road in Warren County, using his observations to inform planning decisions.

“There’s nothing you do not know about Warren County, probably because you biked it,” said Commissioner Lori Ciesla.

Commissioner James R. Kern III, a former mayor of Pohatcong, emphasized Dech’s accessibility and willingness to assist local officials. “He always helped us understand planning issues and navigate state development mandates,” Kern said.

“Your footprint is here and will be forever,” added County Administrator Alex Lazorisak.

Dech expressed gratitude to the current and past commissioners and credited his department’s staff for their support and dedication. “The accomplishments of the Planning Department would not have been possible without them,” he said.

At the same meeting, the board announced that Assistant Director Ryan Conklin has been promoted to Planning Director.

A Belvidere resident, Dech said he is training for a half-marathon this fall as he enters retirement.
