Sussex County Community College to host free lectures, workshops this September

NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — The Center for Lifelong Learning at Sussex County Community College will host a series of free presentations in September, ranging from history lectures to art workshops, as part of its ongoing partnership with the Sussex County Division of Senior Services.

The month’s programs begin Sept. 11 with “The Wives of Henry VIII,” a lecture by Dr. Robyn Muir at 2 p.m. in the Atrium of the Performing Arts Center. The presentation will explore the lives of the six wives of England’s Tudor monarch.

The Center will also continue its Community Journalist Certificate Program, offered free for a second year through grant funding. The hands-on program explores the fundamentals of journalism and will be available in-person and online beginning Sept. 23. In-person sessions will meet Tuesdays from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the Media Center behind Building D on campus.

Art programming includes “Explore Alcohol Ink Painting,” a beginner-friendly workshop led by Professor Sherry Fitzgerald. Sessions are scheduled for Sept. 25 and Oct. 16 from 10 a.m. to noon in Room C202 of the Art Gallery. Participants will create bookmarks and abstract artwork using alcohol ink techniques.

In addition, a five-part Introduction to Drawing course will be offered on Saturdays beginning Sept. 27 and continuing through Oct. 25. The class, taught by Fine Arts faculty member Michael Hughes, will focus on observational drawing and techniques including line, proportion, and shading. The cost of the course is $30, and students must bring their own supplies.
