Morris County surrogate marks ‘Make a Will’ Month with estate planning seminars
MORRISTOWNS, N.J. (Morris County) — Morris County Surrogate Heather Darling is recognizing national “Make a Will” Month by continuing a series of in-person seminars aimed at educating residents about wills and estate planning.
August is recognized as national “Make a Will” Month, and Darling said her presentations are intended to raise awareness about the importance of having an estate plan.
“It is my focus to raise awareness about estate planning and to encourage Morris County residents to create a will or update the one they have,” said Surrogate Darling.
This week, Darling met with the Mine Hill “Good Years Club” senior group, where she discussed several estate planning topics, including the process of probating a will through the Morris County Surrogate’s Office.
Darling emphasized that estate planning can help ensure a person’s property is distributed according to their wishes and allows parents to name guardians for minor children.
“Without a plan, state laws may control your assets,” said Darling.
Darling’s seminars also provide information about the role of the Morris County Surrogate’s Office and the services it offers.
Participants receive copies of “A Citizens Guide to Wills, Trusts and Estates” and a “Personal Record,” both created by the Morris County Surrogate’s Court.
The Personal Record is designed to give residents a place to document important personal information that family members or an executor may need during an emergency or when administering an estate.
Both publications are available for download through the Surrogate’s Office website.
Darling plans to continue offering seminars on estate planning and other topics throughout Morris County.
