Dog training areas to be stocked with chukars in October ahead of pheasant season

NEW JERSEY — Hunters preparing for pheasant season will soon have a chance to train their dogs in designated areas across New Jersey.

The New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife announced that 11 Wildlife Management Area (WMA) dog training areas will be stocked with chukars on Fridays in October, beginning Oct. 4. Birds will be released late Friday afternoons for training on Saturdays, Oct. 4, 11, 18 and 25.

The stocked training areas include Whittingham, Pequest, Black River, and Clinton in the north; Assunpink, Manasquan, Colliers Mills, and Stafford Forge in central New Jersey; and Glassboro, Millville, and Tuckahoe in the south.

Officials emphasized that the chukars are for training purposes only and cannot be fired upon. All dogs must be properly licensed.

The Youth Pheasant Hunt is scheduled for Nov. 1 and Nov. 3–7. The regular pheasant season opens Saturday, Nov. 8.
